I grew up in a fairly small town and was always active as I was growing up; soccer, basketball, and dancing kept me busy. During my high school years I ran track and cross country and also began my quest in the world of weights. There I took my first weights class for P.E and realized that I was extremely strong for my size. My dad tried to talk me into competing when I was in high school but being so young I thought nothing of it.College came along and there wasn't much else to do other than study, so I used working out as a way to de-stress. I was introduced to my first fitness competition, Women's Tri Fitness, through Callie Marunde a strong woman competitor. She trained me, and I was hooked!! Competing is a way of life for me, it's my way to let my competitive side out, push myself and stay motivated!

Twenty-one years ago, I got started in bodybuilding and it all began with a visit home to see my family. I was going to college out of town and came home to see my parents and brother one weekend. Keep in mind that I wasn’t athletic in high school; I tried track and tennis but just never seemed to be any good at either. When I left to go to college, I fell into the usual scene of eating and partying like most college students, but if one isn't active...well, we all know what happens! I was about 140 pounds of flab. So, when I came home for that visit 21 years ago, my brother; who is brutally honest, told me my butt was getting really big. Well, no girl wants to be told her butt is big especially from her brother! I was pretty mad to say the least. The same weekend, my brother asked if I wanted to attend my first bodybuilding show. As I watched; still fuming from what he had said, I told myself I was going to be competing on stage the following year. I moved back home, started lifting with my brother and running every day, and the next year I was on stage at the 1987 WSU Intercollegiate Bodybuilding show as a lightweight weighing 102 pounds; too lean for my standards today, but back then it was quite an accomplishment. I have been lifting ever since and I am still learning something new every day!

How I Started: Well, I was always into sports when I was in school (gymnastics/cheer), but then when I got to high school, I focused on my grades and left the sports on the back burner. I found myself gaining weight and it spiraled downhill from there. At my heaviest, I remember weighing almost 190lbs (I would not step on the scale anymore after that!). I finally had a breaking point when I moved out on my own and got into rollerblading at a long paved bikepath near my apt. I didn't want to workout around people at that point because I was so self-conscious, so rollerblading was perfect... alone, outdoors and could go for miles if I wanted to (I worked up to that!). I didn't have the greatest eating habits still at that point, as I was taking in far too little for all the exercise I was doing, and poor food choices and my mother noticed. So, she hired a nutrition planner. From there, I just got more and more into learning how to care for my body through nutrition and training. I am constantly wanting to learn and ask my coach probably waaaay too many questions, but that's me! Hahaaa.
Why I Love It: It challenges you to be better... There are sacrifices I must make, but then I see the positive outcome and it keeps me moving forward. Plus, it is absolutely the best learning experience I’ve ever had… each time is different and each time I learn more!
How I Stay Motivated: I set goals and focus on that. Lately, I’ve been using the competitions as my marker. I also use pictures of people I aspire to be like. Music helps, too!
